  • Bat counting – Our 600 lesser horseshoes, 1000 pipistrelles, officially counted every June.
  • Birdwatching – 90+ species including goshawks, hawfinches, peregrine falcons (see second photo).
  • Canoeing – Mawddach estuary, Rivers Wnion, Mawddach, Eden, Gain, Gamlan, Dyfi.
  • Castles, houses – Caernarfon, Erddig, Harlech, Penrhyn, Powys, Portmeirion.
  • Cycling – green lanes, Mawddach Trail, country lanes, National network route 8.
  • Dog exercising – tracks through our woodland, our old carriageway to the town and back by run-free recreation green, also our two fields when resting from sheep.
  • Ecology – Alternative Technology Centre.
  • Fishing – Coarse and fly, own 100m riverbank (see photo alongside), free Dolgellau Angling Association permit to 13 miles river and spectacular lake, salmon, sea and brown trout, perch (lake).
  • Games – ideal garden for treasure hunts, flat area of lawn for ball games, and Dolgellau’s spacious nearby recreation green.
  • Golf – Dolgellau, Aberdovey, Borth, Harlech.
  • Horse riding – Arthog, Dyffryn.
  • Mountain-biking – Coed y Brenin (see photo below, left), Cli-machx, Mach, Nant yr Arian, Gwydyr.
  • Mountains – Cader Idris, Arans, Rhinogs, Arenigs, Moelwyns, Snowdon.
  • Nature Trails – Llanbedr, Harlech, Vyrnwy.
  • Painting, Sketching – the garden and grounds provide endless inspiration.  No wonder Hugh John Reveley sketched himself (last photo, bottom right) sketching in its grounds!
  • Photography – Countless subjects here like the bird alongside, taken from The Mews cottage.
  • Sailing – Bala Lake, Barmouth, Llanbedr.
  • Swimming – beaches (Fairbourne, Barmouth), pools (Tywyn, Harlech).
  • Television – our digital Sony TVs allow screen enjoyment of camera images, DVDs, etc.
  • Walking – 30+ own guide sheets for home-start walks (3-16 miles), plus numerous official guides (like Precipice Walk) collected over years (see photo of the Black Falls, right).
  • Wildlife – our woodland (badgers, polecats), our roofs (bats, owls), our ponds, (dragonflies, herons), our riverbank (otters, mink).

Greenfinch, one of many birds on The Mews garden wall photographed by Walter Covell while on holiday in the cottage.  Others were blackbird, chaffinch, blue tit, great tit and nuthatch.
